A Fine Music Keyboard: The Digital Piano
Many who enjoy playing piano dream of owning a concert grand piano, one that they can practice on and perform for family and friends with at home. But a concert grand piano is an expensive investment and requires a large space in which it can sound beautiful to make it truly worthwhile to own. For those who don’t have the financial means or the space, there are a few good sounding digital 88 key music keyboards to choose from.
Yamaha manufactures some of the finest acoustic pianos as well as some of the best digital pianos. The Clavinova series is their flagship lineup of digital pianos, featuring the carefully sampled sound of their best acoustic grand piano, the CF III S. The Clavinova pianos take up about as much space as an upright piano, and generate their sound via a built-in, high-quality speaker system.
The sound, together with the weighted keys, 3 pedals, and the beautifully crafted wood cabinetry will allow you to feel as if you’re playing an acoustic piano. The digital pianos have the added advantage of always being in tune, you can select other instrument voices to play such as organ or strings, and you can take advantage of other functionality such as recording your performances via MIDI. Yamaha offers a few other series of digital pianos such as the Modus, a more contemporary design with high-quality sound, and the Arius YDP series which are a simpler version of the Clavinova at a lower price point.
Roland is another notable manufacturer of digital pianos, offering an “Upright” series which resemble the Clavinova pianos by Yamaha, and a “Grand” series that looks like a baby grand acoustic piano, complete with a lid that opens and closes and even affects the speaker-generated sound coming from the body, just like a real acoustic baby grand. The visual realism is, of course, matched by the weighted keys and the high-quality piano sound samples and speaker system built into Roland digital pianos.
There are other manufacturers of digital pianos such as Casio, Kurtzweil, and M-Audio. All companies mentioned above have several models, at different price-points, offering different functionality from a large collection of instrument voices to arranger functions with accompaniment styles. You can find out more about digital keyboard instruments at the Music Keyboards Guide website. Whatever your budget is you are sure to find a digital piano that will provided a satisfying sound and feel of its acoustic equivalent with a lot more functionality and convenience.
