The Perfect Quinceanera Invitation

Parents who throw Quinceanera parties for their 15-year-old daughters’ birthdays are generally pretty serious about them. In fact, since Quinceaneras are regarded as both religious and social occasions in Latin American families, it’s not uncommon for guest lists to top 200 so that everyone in their social and church circles can attend. That’s why every element has to be perfect, from theĀ  Quinceanera invitations, right down to the special high-heeled shoes that the guests of honor don to symbolize their passage into womanhood.

Even though these special coming of age parties traditionally honor 15-year-olds (hence the names “Quinceanera” or “Mis Quince Anos,” both of which contain the Spanish word for 15), a Quinceanera invitation looks a lot like a wedding invitation. More traditional invitations feature depictions of the fancy gowns, shoes and tiaras that are so indicative of the occasion. But more modern invitations run the gamut of imagery, from photos of the birthday girl to flowers to a downright grungy appearance that looks like graffiti.

No matter the look, the invitation wording is usually quite formal. Much like some wedding invitations, the guest of honor is presented by her parents and the invitations state that fact. Her escort — the boy that will be her date for the big party — is also sometimes mentioned, along with her “court,” which contains her best friends and their escorts. The tone of the rest of the wording depends on the way each family approaches the event. If their emphasis is more on the religious aspect, then that is reflected in the invitation text. If the party is just seen as a rite of passage and/or a wonderful opportunity to throw a major blow-out, then the wording is more light-hearted and sometimes shorter.

No matter the verbiage, the birthday girl and her parents want the event and its invitations to reflect their unique personalities. After all, the invitations and cards from guests who attend the event; along with the tiara, shoes and dress; are often archived so they can take their rightful place in family history. So the more each aspect reflects the sensibilities of the people involved, the more beautiful the memories will be.
