Why Are We Afraid of Ghosts?
The supernatural is an intriguing and frightening subject. It is strange how people believe in ghosts and are afraid of them at the same time. Is it the graphic images portrayed in movies; or is it the haunted ghost videos on the internet? There are so many movies and videos of ghosts and demons caught on tape, but none of them give us an explanation for our fear of ghosts. Hollywood makes millions of dollars every year with ghost movies. They supply our need to laugh, our need to believe anything is possible, and that unexplained fear through magic movies is very real.
Most people believe that fear itself is man-made; while others believe it was built in to our organic make-up. People spend money every day to get scared out of their senses at the movies. The adrenaline rush from horror movies and the haunted ghost videos on the internet fuel the need to see just how brave they are. Of course there is always the ghost movie out there that is based on a true story like The Exorcism of Emily Rose; it is purportedly on the actual exorcism of a woman named Anneliese Michel. Which would be scarier; a movie like The Exorcism of Emily Rose which is based on a true story or a movie like Thirteen Ghosts which is advertised as a complete work of fiction?
It could be the fact that most ghost stories and haunted ghost videos portray ghosts as specters that try to kill or harm a person; which is actually a contradiction to evidence found in thousands of paranormal studies. Most people would say that when they watch what reportedly is authentic ghost footage that what they see is not trying to harm anyone, but the fear is actually more from the surprise of seeing an apparition. There are even shows on television that specialize in capturing videos of real ghosts like ghost hunters or T.A.P’s that show the investigator running away from something that frightened him or her. These are people that find ghosts intriguing and scary at the same time, it would be interesting to ask someone that specializes in catching ghosts on video their opinion on what makes ghosts scary and why.
Answering the question what makes ghosts scary is going to elicit different responses from different people most of the time. Some would say it is the fear of the unknown, or the fact that ghosts are supposed to be spirits of people that have died, being confronted with an aspect of death that means it is not the end, or the thoughts a haunted ghost video invokes in regards to their own mortality. There are of course the people that will answer that question with ghosts are scary because they are afraid that they are going to be harmed by them; regardless of the evidence to the contrary. What makes a ghost scary? The best answer to that question is for you to decide.
