Miscellaneous

One of the big questions you will have to answer when you move into a new home is whether to get cable TV or satellite service.  Each has its own advantages, and it certainly is a good idea to weigh both the pros and cons of each service.  From music channels, to magic movies channels to cooking. Which programs are more abundant in the cable and satellite television world? But what if you are a sports fan?  Which is the best choice – Direct TV or cable?

With your cable TV company, you can of course get the big name sports networks like ESPN and Fox Sports. Generally ESPN2 and ESPNEWS are also included in most digital cable packages.  Direct TV also has all of these channels, and they are included with the Choice Xtra package and higher tier offerings.  You will also be able to watch all of the local sports programming on Direct TV and cable, as networks like CBS are basically included with your cable or satellite subscription. You will also get free online movies on your computer with satellite providers using your account information.

Where the real difference comes in is when you are looking at premium sports packages such as the NFL Sunday Ticket.  This package and the Nascar Hotpass are exclusives of Direct TV.  So if you are weighing a decision between Direct TV or cable then a factor like this might tilt you strongly toward the satellite TV option.  However, there are plenty of other out of market sports packages like the NBA League Pass and the NHL Center Ice offer that are available through both satellite and cable television.

All of these out of market sports packages can set you back several hundred dollars or more.  The Sunday Ticket cost for 2009 was nearly $400 if you wanted the games in HD, and the basketball and hockey packages both run about $200 per season.  All of the sports packages do give you plenty of live professional action, so hard core sports fans are willing to shell out the additional cash so they can catch their hometown team no matter where they live.
