A Look Into Movies And Magic On The Silver Screen

9 August, 2009 (21:21) | Movies with Magic | By:

Movies and magic have been around for many years and they have always been able to draw millions to the box office to see them and then going on to become box office hits. Harry Potter and the Twilight Series are the first two who come to mind when I think about this subject matter. From very small young children, teenagers and even adults, many love to watch movies about magic. Everywhere you look the movie studios are making just these types of movies that range in subject matter that entertains age groups from small children to adults. These magic movies can be about fairy god mothers to sorcery and witchcraft.

One of the all time favorite movies and it is still watched today and that is Bed Knobs and Broomsticks. This was a combination of both fantasy and magic. To go back in time some there have even been television shows and not just movies about magic. Some shows that come to mind is the long running classic about magic is the show Bewitched. This show was so popular during its original run that it has been syndicated and forty years after it began generation after generation is able to experience its contribution to fantasy and magic. In fact back in 2005 this show as remade into a movie starring Nicole Kidman as Samantha. A more modern show that can be found on the Disney Channel is the Wizards of Waverly Place. This hour long show has become a very popular hit with children of all ages and its popularity just continues to grow with each episode. Charmed is a modern day show about magic. It aired for about 8 years or so but it was about three sisters who have to live their lives as normally as possible while fighting off demons and keeping the world safe.

One great older movie with magic that comes to mind starred some of my favorite actors. This was Witches of Eastwick and it starred, Jack Nicholson, Cher, Michelle Pfeiffer and Susan Sarandon. One of the biggest new hits is the Twilight series. This series of movies is expected to break records based on the fact that the first Twilight movie was a low budget hit that made hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office. New Moon is the next Twilight movie to hit theaters due out in November and is set to break all sorts of movie records. This movie isn’t about magic but the theme of the movie is set in the same genre as other movies on magic. The Harry Potter movies, in the same genre as the Twilight Series, has been named the most successful of the magic movies series or fantasy since Star Wars was released.

The more I write the more magic shows and movies come to mind. If someone were to sit down and make a list to name movies and magic they would be surprised by the fact that their list would name hundreds of movies and television shows that have been about the subject of magic. As long as people are willing to go out or even stay home and watch movies about magic the studios will continue to create them to meet the demand of the audience.

A Look At Some Of The Movies With Magic In Them

There are so many movies with magic in them that its hard to know where to start. Magical movies tend to be classified in the kids or fantasy categories and they can provide a lot of fun and a way to escape the norm especially if you are a youngster. There are magic movies for individuals of all ages and many of them can be enjoyable for children, teens and adults. I personally never get tired of the magic movie arena and hopefully you do not either. Here is a brief look at some of the following best movies with magic so eloquently on display.

The first movies that contain magic that come to mind are all of the Harry Potter films. These movies have two distinct worlds, a non magical world and a magical world. The Harry Potter movies have been a mainstay since they were first released though the most frequent movies have a much darker tone to them. If you don’t find some slight deviations from the actual books and just take them as movies then they are quite enjoyable. Its not too bad but as we all know the movie rarely lives up to the hype of a book. However these magic films have far surpassed expectations.

Another great series of movies that contain magic are the Neverending Story movies. While the magical part is considered to be a dream in the first Neverending Story containing the world of Fantastica. This world is being destroyed by the Nothing. The nothing is supposed to represent a lack of imagination in the real world and the young warrior is sent to find a cure. This movie has plenty of magic spells in it and a great break from the norm as far as reality is concerned.

A favorite magical movie of mine that your kids will love as mine did is Bed knobs and Broomsticks from Walt Disney. This movie is about a good witch that takes some orphans to explore an underwater world. They travel on a magical bed. The movie is set around the Second World War when children are being sent out of the cities. Some of the group’s adventures include escaping the Nazis and playing football with some animals. This movie is an excellent blend of animation and magic.

The Chronicles of Narnia films are full of magic and nothing is more magical then the lion Aslan. In this book 4 children discover a magic wardrobe that acts as a passage to the world of Narnia. They must fight the white witch in order to free the creatures that live in Narnia and stop the never ending winter. The chronicles of Narnia has something for everyone as there is plenty of magic, comedy and battles. There are two films and a third on the way in this trilogy of magical wonder and enjoyment.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy is full of magic though it may not be considered magic in the traditional sense of the word. Gandalf and Saruman are wizards and the elves also contain a type of magic as they can never die. There are ghost, goblins, orcs, hobbits, dwarves, elves and more in the Lord of the Rings. It really is an amalgamation of all fantasy creatures you could ever find in a set of movies. It should be noted that the Lord of the rings movies may not be suitable for children.

For those great kids movies that feature magic you have the Sword in the Stone which contains the wizard Merlin. There is a great duel between Merlin and a witch. Mary poppins uses plenty of magic in her adventures with the children. Ella Enchanted has fairies and curses that can create a great story and Enchanted has plenty of magic that manages to escape into the real world.
