If you are in the Midwest you are likely to have heard of the backyard and tailgate game known by a variety of names. Frequently called cornhole, corn toss, and bean bag toss, this game is most popular in the Midwest but is spreading across the country thanks to the game’s fans.

There are many stories as to how the game was created. Some people say that it actually began hundreds of years ago in Germany. Then it was brought over to America by a German farmer. Others claim that it began in Ohio in the past few decades. Whether it was started in Ohio or not, it is wildly popular there. Some people say that it began somewhere else in the southeast, such as the foothills of Kentucky. Others say that the game can actually be traced back to ancient civilizations where people may have played with rocks, although this seems a bit unlikely.  No one can decide how exactly the game started, but what is certain is that people now love this game.

In order to play, you will need some basic equipment which includes eight corn toss bags and two target platforms. You can purchase a set at some stores, although these may not be regulation size. If you are very serious about getting into the sport, you can purchase the equipment online. Many online stores offer regulation equipment including corn toss bags made of duck cloth and filled with dried corn. They are also the right size and weight—six by six inches and exactly one pound.

These vendors also have experience building the right size platforms. There are some basic rules as to how far you have to stand from the platform, how wide the pitcher’s square should be, and where the foul lines are, but the game of cornhole is not hard to learn so consider getting in on the new rave.
